ERAMET’s Manganese division extracts and processes manganese ore. Manganese is used in various alloys essential to the composition of steel.
The manganese market is driven mainly by the growth in the global production of carbon steel. In such a context, the Division endeavors to:
-increase its knowledge of production processes;
-continue to improve the quality of its products.
Manganese Alloys, Used for Steel, Essential in the Construction and Automotive Sectors
Nearly 90% of world manganese production goes into steelmaking, essential to the construction and automotive industries.
The construction market represents more than half the world’s steel consumption. The potential for growth in this sector remains high for years to come: growth is due to the urbanization and industrialization of emerging countries, in particular, China and India.
Steel producers use manganese in the form of alloys. ERAMET extracts the manganese and processes it into ferromanganese and silicomanganese. These make up 6 to 7% of the composition of steel and give it its properties of elasticity, hardness, suitability for welding, resistance to wear and abrasion.
Manganese-based Chemicals for the Production of General Consumer Goods
The chemical industry also uses manganese. The volumes are smaller but the uses are extremely diverse. The Manganese division produces chemical derivatives for use in various sectors:
-energy, mainly in the production of alkaline batteries and accumulators;
-agriculture, in the manufacture of fertilizers and animal feedstuffs;
-electronics, for high-tech components;
-fine chemicals, in surface treatments for metals, and pigments.
